CHAPTER 32

AMBER COMES HOME THE NEXT afternoon, looking tired. Her hair is windblown and her face is pallid except for where someone has pasted temporary tattoos of glittery, gold suns on it.

“Hey,” she says.

“How was your night?”

“It was …” her face brightens for a moment, thinking about all the fun she must have had while breaking Blake's heart, standing him up like that. Bitch.

Then she seems to notice the look on my face and decides to keep her comments in check. “It was exhausting. Seriously. You should be glad you didn’t have to go through the whole thing.” She takes off her shoes.

“Blake came by,” I said. “He said you had a date?”

She flops into bed, fully clothed, face into her pillow. “Yeah, he found me.”

I panic but try not to let it seep into my voice. “What did he say?”

Could he have told her? No. It was special. Just between us. He wouldn’t have shared something so special with her.

“He wasn’t mad. He knows how pledging goes.”

“Well, that’s good.” It’s not good. Not at all. She stood him up! And he’s letting it slide? How could he? It was the perfect excuse. He should’ve told her it was over. He had a clear out with Amber. She fucked up. He should’ve used it.

And Amber, so cavalier about all of it. I mean, come on.

I’m about ready to call her out on it, tell her exactly what I think of everything she’s been doing to Blake: unappreciative, uncaring, neglectful—all the things I would never be. I stand up so I can see her better, so she can see me.

But she’s already asleep.
